The Ogun State Government has revealed plans to generate electricity through one of the unlikeliest of ways - sawdust. This is to boost the dwindling power supply in the country, especially in recent times.Punch reports that the Ogun state Commissioner for Forestry, Chief Kolawole Lawal, stated this during a visit to sawmills in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu-East Local Government. The project, according to the commisioner, was being supported by the United Nations.
“The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Electricity Commission of Nigeria and the state government are on a project now that will convert sawdust to energy,” he said.
The state is currently carrying out a feasibility study to ascertain how possible the project will be.
Lawal also called on the saw millers not to waste sawdust, adding that even though it was seen as a waste product, it would soon become a raw material for energy generation.
