Akon shares the music video for his new song, "Tell Me We’re OK", featuring DJ Hardwerk, to highlight the need for sustainable energy in Africa, using technology developed by a British inventor. Akon has collaborated with oil giant Shell to create a #makethefuture programme that aims to create renewable energy projects around the globe.
Akon has become an active campaigner on behalf of countries without reliable access to electricity. In 2014, he started a project to provide electricity in 15 African countries for 1 Billion people.“I was one of the kids who grew up using kerosene for cooking. It was all we had. But it's hard for anyone to develop in a state of darkness. Darkness brings you down" said Akon.
